Gimuy (Cairns) Invasion Day rally

This rally was coordinated by the Yoora Maltha Collective & Blaktivation FNQ, and supported by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth-led organisation called DIYDG. Yoora Maltha is all about empowering the community, elevating community-based solutions and advocating for social justice and Blaktivation is a grassroots, regional movement that’s committed to campaigning, advocacy and community activation.

After organising the 2024 Invasion day event with limited resources, the 2025 rally attracted larger crowds and media attention.

 

“We had powerful speakers, including Elders, young people, and local activists, and the march through the city was strong. There was a real sense of unity and resistance. A mix of people took part—mostly First Nations community members, but also allies who showed up to stand with us. Local media covered the event, which helped get our message out wider. It felt like a really strong moment for our community.”
