Beyond the Deficit – Larrakia Language Revitalisation

$30,000

The Larrakia Language Flash Card Initiative aims to provide Larrakia families and those that live on Larrakia Country with an opportunity to revive the language fluently. By introducing these language flash cards to Larrakia families intially, the program seeks to inspire Larrakia people across all generations to learn language and pass it down to future generations, ensuring its vitality and resilience.

The flash card sets will cover themes such as body parts, people, country, seasons, and animals, with each set developed in collaboration with a Larrakia artist and guided by consultations with Larrakia Elders. Language is vital to sense of self and identity, and all Larrakia children have the right from birth to know their language, and this project creates another opportunity and resource for this to happen.

Alongside the flash cards, co-founders Sharna Alley and Ty Nakata will each author a children’s book. Sharna’s book will celebrate Larrakia Country and culture, while Ty’s book will introduce a story of tradition from the Torres Strait Islands. Together, these resources will amplify the unique histories and cultural narratives of their regions, sharing them with children nationwide.

“Knowing language is vital to wellbeing. This could make our youth feel connected to their identity and culture again in order to create stronger communities and address the issue of youth crime. This is our birthright to know our languages fluently.”
